The townscape of Middlesex is a patchwork of different towns linked by roads and railways, a pattern that has grown steadily since the industrial revolution. Nevertheless, this does not always erase the distinctiveness of each place. It has become a laboratory for administrative innovation, testing systems that were later adopted or rejected elsewhere as urbanisation proceeded apace.
Middlesex is an ex-county, absorbed into Greater London in 1965. Yet its tenacity refuses to die, and thousands of Londoners still include the name in their addresses. Its enduring popularity stems from an ancient custom, and from the fact that it’s an enchanting name that dates back to 704 CE.
The name derives from the Middle Saxons, a tribe that joined the East Saxons of Essex, the West Saxons of Wessex and the South Saxons of Sussex. The county shifted around over the centuries, until it settled down as a chunk of land north of the Thames and west of the Lea. Central London was also part of it, a fact that explains why we can still find the Middlesex Sessions House and Guildhall in Parliament Square.
